PowerEdge R740 2U dual-socket server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Silver 4110 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with eight cores. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. Eight 2.4 TB 10K SAS drives and a PERC H730P controller provide internal storage. The platform targets virtualization, database and compute-heavy workloads in a two-socket form factor.

Installation notes and common issues

The chassis includes ready rails and a front bezel for standard rack mounting. Redundant 750 W hot-swap power supplies allow replacement without downtime. Memory population follows the 24-slot DDR4 layout; mixing registered ECC with unbuffered modules will prevent boot. The PERC H730P battery must be seated for write-back caching to activate. SFP+ transceivers for the X520 10 GbE ports are not included.

Dual Xeon Silver 4110 CPUs maintain a 2.1 GHz base frequency under continuous multi-threaded load with a 3.0 GHz turbo ceiling. The 750 W platinum supplies share load evenly across both units. Eight 10K SAS drives deliver consistent throughput for RAID 5, 6, 10, 50 or 60 arrays managed by the H730P 2 GB cache. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides remote thermal and power telemetry during extended operations.
