System-specific DDR3L server upgrade

This OWC kit supplies 32 GB of DDR3L 1600 ECC registered memory in a matched pair of 16 GB modules. It is built for Supermicro SuperServer 4047R, 4048B, 5017GR, 5017R and 5027R platforms that require registered DIMMs with error correction. The modules run at 1.35 V and carry a CL11 latency rating. This memory is not compatible with standard desktop computers or unbuffered DIMM slots.

Registered ECC changes system behaviour

Registered buffering reduces electrical load on the memory controller, allowing the server to populate more slots than unbuffered memory would permit. ECC detects and corrects single-bit errors, protecting data integrity in always-on workloads. The two-module kit enables dual-channel operation on supported boards, increasing throughput compared with a single DIMM. No heat spreaders are fitted, so airflow across the modules must be maintained by the chassis design.

Verify slot type and population rules

Confirm that your SuperServer model lists DDR3L 240-pin RDIMM support and that the BIOS revision recognises 16 GB registered modules. Registered memory cannot be mixed with unbuffered DIMMs in the same channel, so remove any existing unbuffered sticks before installation. Check the server documentation for maximum capacity per channel and approved population sequences to avoid POST failures. This kit is not suited for systems that require unbuffered or non-ECC memory.
