Industrial 8-port RS-232 PCIe card

The UOTEK UT-788 adds eight DB9 serial ports through a single PCI Express x1 slot, targeting industrial automation, POS and ATM systems that still rely on legacy RS-232 equipment such as modems, printers and scanners. Each channel supports modem control signals including DCD, DTR, DSR, RTS and CTS for full peripheral compatibility. The board operates across a -40 to 85 °C range, suiting harsh cabinet or outdoor deployments. Driver support spans Windows 2000 through Windows 7, Linux 2.4.x and 2.6.x, VxWorks and Windows CE 4.2, 5.0 and 6.0.

Replaces multiple single-port adapters

Consolidating eight ports onto one card eliminates the need for several individual PCI or USB serial converters, reducing slot usage and cable clutter in rackmount or embedded PCs. The upgrade is worthwhile when a project demands more than four simultaneous RS-232 links or when a legacy motherboard lacks enough free expansion slots for separate cards. Systems that only require one or two serial connections will not benefit from the extra density and should consider a simpler alternative.

Sustained throughput with 256-byte FIFO

Each port sustains up to 921.6 Kbps with configurable data bits from 5 to 8, stop bits of 1, 1.5 or 2, and parity options of none, even, odd, space or mark. Hardware and software flow control via RTS/CTS and XON/XOFF prevents buffer overruns during continuous streams. The on-board 256-byte FIFO per channel offloads interrupt handling from the host CPU, keeping latency low during prolonged multi-port traffic. The PCIe 2.5 Gbps bus provides ample headroom so that aggregate throughput remains stable under load.
