Dense 1U dual-socket server

The PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors running at 2.1 GHz with 12 cores each. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules and eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS hard drives. A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management are included.

Suits scale-out compute and virtualisation clusters

This configuration suits organisations that need high core density in a single rack unit for virtualisation, database or high-performance computing workloads. The eight 2.5-inch SAS bays and quad-port 1 GbE plus dual 10 Gb SFP+ networking provide balanced I/O for scale-out deployments. Buyers who need more than eight drive bays or who require a different drive interface should look at a different platform. Systems needing more than two processors or memory beyond the 3 TB maximum are also not addressed by this unit.

24 DDR4 slots with 3 TB maximum

The server provides 24 DDR4 DIMM slots supporting up to 3 TB of registered ECC memory, which determines how large a virtualisation host or in-memory database can grow. Current population uses four slots, leaving 20 slots available for expansion. This memory ceiling is the primary factor when sizing the system for a specific workload.
