The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualisation, database and general compute workloads. It ships with one Intel Gold 6132 processor at 2.6 GHz with 14 cores and 128 GB of DDR4 memory across eight 16 GB modules. The chassis supports up to eight 2.5-inch drive bays and includes redundant 1100 W power supplies. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides full remote management out of the box.

Capacity and headroom

Installed storage consists of two 480 GB SATA SSDs managed by an H730P RAID controller, leaving six 2.5-inch bays free for expansion. The 128 GB DDR4 configuration fills eight memory slots, so further memory growth requires replacing modules. PCIe Gen 3 slots offer up to eight lanes for additional network or accelerator cards. The single-socket design caps compute threads at 28, limiting heavily threaded workloads.

Single-socket 14-core constraint

Only one processor socket is populated, fixing the maximum core count at 14 and thread count at 28. Buyers who need dual-socket performance or higher core density must look elsewhere. The platform supports a second Gold 6132, but that CPU is not included. Workloads scaling beyond 28 threads will hit this ceiling immediately.
