Two-channel SATA RAID adapter

The CoolGear SS-SA2R adds two SATA II ports to any system with a free PCI Express slot. A Silicon Image SiI3132 controller drives both channels at up to 3.0Gb/s and handles RAID 0, 1, 0+1 or RAID 5 when a port multiplier is used. The card ships new and includes a dip-switch to enable or disable the onboard RAID BIOS.

Fits a single PCI Express lane

Installation consumes one PCI Express lane running at 2.5Gb/s and provides one internal and one external SATA connector. Legacy Command Queuing and Native Command Queuing are both supported, so the host can issue multiple commands without extra driver overhead. FIS-based switching lets a port multiplier share the link efficiently.

Replaces a single-port or non-RAID SATA card

Builders moving from a basic single-channel adapter gain a second drive connection and hardware RAID levels without adding a second bracket. The jump is worthwhile when mirrored or striped arrays are needed but a full hardware RAID controller is not justified. Systems limited to 1.5Gb/s SATA see a throughput increase to 3.0Gb/s.
