The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built around a single Intel Gold 6132 processor with 14 cores at 2.6GHz. It ships with 64GB of DDR4 memory in four 16GB modules and four 1.2TB 10K SAS drives managed by an H730P controller. This configuration suits virtualisation hosts and database workloads that need balanced compute and fast local storage.

PCIe Gen 3 limits expansion bandwidth

The chassis provides up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots for add-in cards such as GPUs, network adapters or additional storage controllers. Gen 3 bandwidth caps each lane at 8 GT/s, so high-throughput devices will not reach the speeds possible on newer generations. The integrated Intel X550 network daughter card delivers two 10Gb RJ45 and two 1Gb RJ45 ports for flexible connectivity.

Tool-less rails simplify rack mounting

Included sliding rails allow the 2U chassis to be secured in a standard 19-inch rack without tools, and the bezel snaps on afterwards. The 1100W redundant power supplies are hot-pluggable, but cable routing at the rear can be tight when all eight drive bays and PCIe cards are populated. iDRAC9 Enterprise gives full remote console and firmware management over a dedicated port.
