The Dell PowerEdge R730XD is a 2U rack server built for dense storage workloads. It fits data-centre racks and edge locations that need up to twelve hot-plug 3.5-inch drive bays in a compact form factor. A single Intel Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processor at 1.9 GHz provides baseline compute for file, backup or archive duties. The system ships new with 128 GB of DDR4 memory installed across 24 DIMM slots.

Memory capacity and storage headroom

Installed memory reaches the controller-supported maximum of 128 GB, leaving no free DIMM slots for expansion without removing modules. The architecture allows up to 1536 GB when both processor sockets are populated, so a second CPU unlocks significant headroom. Twelve 3.5-inch bays accept SAS or SATA drives, and the H330 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60 for a raw capacity ceiling of 52 TB. No drives or trays are included.

Thermals, noise and power draw

Dual 750 W redundant hot-swap power supplies share the load and maintain operation if one unit fails. The 2U chassis uses forced-air cooling tuned for continuous rack deployment; acoustic output is typical for enterprise rack gear and not suited to quiet office spaces. Power draw scales with drive count and CPU utilisation, while the Matrox G200 graphics subsystem adds minimal thermal load. Remote management via iDRAC8 enables sensor monitoring without physical access.
