The Dell PowerEdge R730XD is a 2U rack server built for environments that need many drive bays in a compact chassis. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 eight-core processor at 2.4 GHz, 16 GB of DDR4 memory and three 1 TB 7.2K SATA drives. The H730 RAID controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across up to twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug bays. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies and a four-port 1 GbE daughter card are included.

Upgrade from single-socket or smaller-bay servers

Adding a second Xeon processor doubles the core count and unlocks the remaining twelve DIMM slots, raising the memory ceiling to 1 536 GB. Filling the empty drive bays with SAS or SATA drives expands raw capacity toward the 52 TB maximum. The jump is worth it when your current chassis cannot hold more disks or when workloads exceed the sixteen-thread limit of the installed CPU.

Straightforward rack installation

The unit slides into a standard 2U rack space using the supplied rails; hot-plug trays let you add or replace drives without tools or downtime. The iDRAC8 Express module provides remote console and power control over a dedicated management port, simplifying first boot. Common issues arise when the second processor is added without matching memory population rules or when the RAID array is configured before all drives are seated, causing the controller to miss disks.
