Dual Silver 4210R server for virtualised workloads

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Silver 4210R processors. Each CPU provides 10 cores at 2.4GHz with 13.75M cache. The system ships with 256GB of DDR4 memory arranged as 16 modules of 16GB PC4-2666. Six 480GB SATA SSDs are installed and managed by an H730P RAID controller. An Intel X550 network daughter card delivers two 10Gb RJ45 and two 1Gb RJ45 ports. Dual 1100W redundant power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management are included.

PCIe Gen 3 limits expansion bandwidth

The chassis offers up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots for add-in cards. This generation caps lane throughput at 8 GT/s per lane, so high-bandwidth accelerators or 25Gb networking adapters will not reach their rated speed. The 2.5-inch drive bay layout holds a maximum of eight drives; six bays are already populated with the supplied SSDs, leaving two bays free for future storage growth. No optical drive bay is present.

The installed 256GB DDR4 capacity across 16 populated DIMM slots determines whether this server suits databases, virtual desktop infrastructure or large-scale virtualisation.
