This new Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Silver 4210R processors, each running at 2.4GHz with ten cores and 13.75M cache. It ships with 32GB of DDR4 memory configured as two 16GB PC4-2666 modules and includes a H730P RAID controller. Four 7.68TB SAS SSDs are installed in the 2.5-inch drive bays, and remote management is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise.

Suited to businesses needing dense compute

The dual ten-core CPUs and high-capacity SAS SSDs make this system a good fit for virtualisation clusters, database nodes or analytics workloads that benefit from redundant 1100W power supplies and up to eight PCIe Gen 3 expansion slots. Organisations requiring optical media, larger memory footprints or GPU acceleration should evaluate other platforms, as this unit has no optical drive and the current 32GB configuration may limit heavily consolidated environments.

Storage capacity decides fit for purpose

The four installed 7.68TB SAS SSDs provide the primary storage pool, and the chassis supports a maximum of eight 2.5-inch drives in total. If the workload demands more raw capacity than the current array delivers, the four empty bays allow straightforward expansion with compatible SAS SSDs; if the dataset already exceeds the available space, a server with higher-density drives or additional chassis will be required.
