The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads that demand compute density and storage flexibility. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 twelve-core processor running at 2.3 GHz and 4 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. The chassis provides 24 small-form-factor drive bays and includes two 600 GB 15 K SAS drives connected to a Smart Array P440 controller with 4 GB flash-backed write cache. Dual 500 W hot-swap power supplies deliver redundancy for continuous operation.

Upgrade path from single-socket

This server replaces single-socket towers or 1U units that have exhausted memory slots, drive bays or PCIe lanes. Adding the second supported processor doubles core count to 24 physical cores and unlocks the remaining 12 DIMM slots for up to 3 TB total memory. The jump is worth it when virtualisation host licensing, database thread concurrency or RAID 50/60 stripe width require the additional processor and memory channels that the C610 chipset provides.

Sustained-load behaviour

Under continuous load the dual 500 W supplies share current evenly, so a single supply failure does not throttle the CPU or the RAID controller. The P440's 4 GB FBWC preserves write ordering during extended sequential workloads such as backup-to-disk or log replay, preventing the write-hole penalty that affects battery-backed units after prolonged uptime. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics core consumes negligible power, leaving the full thermal envelope for the Xeon and memory subsystem.
