  • Designed to Raspberry Pi PIP guidelines for long-term OS support

Pi 5 NVMe storage expansion

The Pimoroni PIM704 NVMe Base Duo adds two M-key NVMe slots to a Raspberry Pi 5 through a PCIe Gen 2 extension board. It accepts M.2 drives from 2230 to 2280 length and is aimed at makers building file servers, media centres or home automation hubs that need fast local storage. The board ships with rubber feet and mounting hardware for compact installation under or over the Pi.

Simple screw-down assembly

Install by attaching the supplied standoffs and bolts, inserting one or two NVMe SSDs into the M.2 slots, and connecting the included PCIe Flex flat-flex cable to the Pi 5. The hardware kit provides 12mm and 20mm M2.5 standoffs plus short bolts for pass-through HAT stacking. No soldering is required, but the flat-flex cable must be seated squarely in both connectors to avoid intermittent detection.

Cannot boot from attached drives

The Raspberry Pi 5 firmware currently boots only from a drive directly on the PCIe bus, not from drives behind the packet switch on this board. You must boot from an SD card or another root device before the system can use the NVMe Base Duo for storage. This limitation applies regardless of the SSD model or capacity chosen.

Jautājumi par šo preci

How can I verify the NVMe Base Duo is functioning correctly after connecting it to my Raspberry Pi 5?

After attaching the board via the PCIe Flex cable and installing one or two M-key NVMe SSDs, boot the Raspberry Pi 5 from an SD card. Use the 'lsblk' or 'nvme list' command in the terminal to confirm each drive appears as a block device.

Which components are included with the PIM704 and what must I purchase separately?

The box contains the NVMe Base Duo PCB, a PCIe Flex flat flex cable, 4 rubber feet, 4 M2 bolts, 2 5mm standoffs for SSD mounting, 4 12mm M2.5 standoffs, 8 short M2.5 bolts for base mounting, and 4 20mm M2.5 bolts for pass-through HAT mounting. You must buy M-key NVMe SSDs separately.

Which M.2 SSD sizes are compatible with the two slots on this board?

Both M-key slots accept NVMe SSDs in 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 form factors, so you can use short or full-length drives in either position.
