Four-port SATA III RAID controller

The weastlinks card adds four internal SATA 6 Gb/s ports through a PCI Express x4 slot that also fits x8 and x16 slots. It uses the Marvell 88SE9230 chipset and supports RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID 10 with selectable stripe sizes of 32K and 64K. Drivers are built into Windows XP through 10, Windows Server 2003 and 2008, and Linux 2.6 or later.

Upgrade from onboard SATA or single-port cards

The jump is worth it when the motherboard lacks enough SATA 6 Gb/s connectors or when a single-port add-in card limits throughput. The PCI Express 2.0 x4 interface removes the bottleneck of older x1 or v1.0 slots, and the card maintains backward compatibility with SATA 3 Gb/s and 1.5 Gb/s drives. It does not support RAID across a port multiplier, so arrays must use the four native ports.

Sustained load behaviour

Under continuous transfers the controller maintains the negotiated link speed of 6.0 Gbps, 3.0 Gbps or 1.5 Gbps without thermal throttling because the card has no active cooling requirement. Native Command Queueing and port multiplier FIS-based switching keep command overhead low during mixed read and write workloads. Hot-plug and hot-swap allow drive replacement without shutting down the system.
