The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 fits a standard 2U rack slot and ships with dual Xeon E5-2609 v3 processors, each running at 1.9GHz with six cores. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory occupy the 24 DIMM slots, reaching the installed maximum. Two 1TB 7.2K SAS drives connect through the Smart HBA H240ar controller, which supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Redundant hot-swap 500W power supplies keep the platform running during a single unit failure.

Upgrade Path from Smaller Configurations

This chassis replaces a single-socket tower or a 1U system when the workload demands two processors and twelve large-form-factor drive bays. The jump is worth it when core count must rise above twelve threads or when local storage must exceed a handful of drives without external enclosures. The C610 chipset and 2400MT/s DDR4 ceiling define the ceiling; processors beyond the v3 family are not supported by this board.

Limits of 12Gb SAS and DDR4 Slots

The H240ar controller tops out at 12Gb SAS and 6Gb SATA, so newer 24Gb SAS devices will negotiate down to the slower link. Memory expansion stops at 64GB because every slot is already populated; any increase requires removing existing modules. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics core provides only basic console output, leaving GPU compute and accelerated rendering unavailable.
