Dual Xeon 14-core server for virtualization

The Supermicro SYS-6028U-TR4T+ is a 2U rackmount server built around two Intel Xeon E5-2690 v4 processors. Each CPU runs at 2.6 GHz with 14 cores, giving 28 threads total for parallel workloads. The system ships with 128 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. It targets teams running virtualization clusters, database instances or compute-heavy batch jobs that benefit from high core counts and error-correcting memory.

Upgrade from single-socket or v3 platforms

Moving from a single-socket E5-2600 v3 box doubles both core count and memory channels, cutting compile times and VM density roughly in half. The jump from v3 to v4 adds higher turbo frequencies and DDR4 2400 support without a socket change. The MegaRAID 9361-8i controller brings 1 GB cache with battery backup, enabling RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across the twelve 3.5" hot-swap bays. This refresh pays off when current storage I/O or CPU queues are the bottleneck.

Limits of the LGA 2011-3 platform

The board maxes out at 1.5 TB across 24 DDR4 slots, so 128 GB leaves headroom but cannot reach the ceiling without larger modules. The 9361-8i connects eight SAS/SATA ports at 12 Gb/s; the remaining four bays need an extra HBA or expander to be usable. Quad 10GBase-T ports from the Intel X540 share PCIe 3.0 lanes with the RAID card and IPMI 2.0 interface. The 1000 W titanium PSUs provide redundancy but fix the power envelope for any future GPU or accelerator additions.
