Add-on board with 24 individually addressable ZIP LEDs that bolts directly onto a BBC micro:bit and includes extension pads
The Kitronik ZIP Halo bolts directly onto a BBC micro:bit using five bolts for a secure fit. It adds 24 individually addressable ZIP LEDs that can each display a full spectrum of colour. Extension connector pads with 0.1 inch pitch allow extra LEDs or low power sensors to be attached. The board suits makers and educators adding visual output to micro:bit projects.
The Halo accepts a supply voltage of 3.5V to 5V and provides a regulated supply to the attached micro:bit. A built in blocking diode protects against reverse polarity. Power can be connected through a JST input using a 3xAAA battery holder or LiPo cell, or soldered directly to the PCB pads. This arrangement keeps wiring simple for portable or desk based experiments.
The single specification that decides fit is the 24 ZIP LEDs driven by WS2812B compatible protocol. Code written for Adafruit NeoPixel libraries works without modification. Buyers who need more than 24 pixels or a different LED density should look elsewhere. The fixed count and protocol define the visual resolution and software approach for every project.

Bolt the board onto the micro:bit using the five mounting bolts for a secure fit; the step often missed is connecting power to the JST input or solder pads before expecting the LEDs to light.
The WS2812B-compatible LEDs are surface-mounted and not user-replaceable; if a pixel fails the whole Halo board would need to be swapped rather than individual LED servicing.
The 3.5 V to 5 V supply and on-board regulator set the practical ceiling; sustained maximum output will hit the voltage headroom or thermal limit of the regulator before the LED array itself.
