The PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages up to eight 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drive bays. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 9 Enterprise provide redundancy and remote management out of the box.

For scale-out compute, not storage-heavy workloads

This configuration suits virtualisation clusters, HPC nodes and dense web tiers that need maximum cores per rack unit. The eight 2.5-inch bays limit local capacity, so workloads that demand many terabytes on-premises should look elsewhere. Organisations without 10 GbE SFP+ switching will not use the X520 ports. Buyers needing GPU acceleration or more than two sockets must choose a different platform.

Two-socket ceiling caps vertical scaling

The R640 supports a maximum of two processors, so the installed pair of Gold 6130 CPUs already reaches the socket limit. Memory can grow to 3 TB across 24 slots, but compute threads cannot increase beyond the current 64 cores. If your roadmap requires adding sockets later, this chassis cannot accommodate that expansion.
