The Dell PowerEdge R740xd chassis holds twelve 3.5-inch drive bays and ships with two Xeon Silver 4114 processors running at 2.2 GHz. Each CPU provides ten cores and 13.75 MB of cache, giving twenty cores total for multi-threaded workloads. The system includes 32 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory in a two-module configuration. It is aimed at organisations that need high local capacity in a 2U rack footprint.

Sustained throughput

The PERC H730P RAID controller manages the SATA backplane and can maintain consistent write bandwidth across all twelve bays during long rebuilds or sequential ingest. Dual 1100 W power supplies share the load so that a single supply failure does not throttle the CPUs or the drive array. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides remote console and sensor logging so administrators can track thermal trends without physical access.

Interface ceiling

The twelve-bay SATA backplane caps aggregate throughput at the controller’s maximum rather than the drive count, so adding faster drives will not scale past the H730P limit. The installed 10 GbE 562T adapter links the server to the network fabric, but the storage path remains bound to the SATA interface. Memory expansion can reach 3 TB using DDR4 modules, though the current two-DIMM layout leaves most slots open for future growth.
