The Dell PowerEdge R740xd packs 24 drive bays and two Xeon Silver 4110 processors into a 2U rack frame. It targets software-defined storage clusters, service-provider platforms and virtual desktop infrastructure where capacity and compute must share the same chassis.

768 GB DDR4 with room to 3 TB

Twenty-four DIMM slots hold 768 GB of registered ECC DDR4-2400 today and can scale to 3 TB when workloads demand more memory. The dual 8-core CPUs at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo handle parallel VMs and storage services, while the H730P controller manages RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across SAS and SATA drives.

12 Gb/s SAS/SATA ceiling and 10 GbE uplinks

The PERC H730P caps drive throughput at 12 Gb/s per port, so SATA SSDs saturate the link before the controller does. Network I/O tops out at two 10 Gb SFP+ and two 1 GbE ports on the X520/I350 daughter card, limiting east-west traffic in all-flash arrays.
