The Dell PowerEdge R740 fits a single Intel Gold 6148 processor with 20 cores at 2.4 GHz and 128 GB of DDR4 memory into a 1U chassis. It targets organisations that need dense compute for virtualisation, database or high-performance workloads. Eight 2.5-inch drive bays and up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots provide internal expansion headroom. Remote management is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise.

Thermals and power at typical load

Dual 1100 W redundant power supplies share the load, keeping each unit in an efficient operating range during normal operation. The 1U form factor uses high-speed fans that ramp based on inlet temperature, so acoustic output stays predictable in a cooled rack aisle. Intel X550 networking delivers two 10 Gb RJ45 and two 1 Gb RJ45 ports without adding a separate adapter card. The H730P RAID controller manages the two 1.92 TB SAS SSDs with hardware acceleration.

With all 20 cores active the Gold 6148 maintains its 2.4 GHz base frequency thanks to the server’s directed airflow design and redundant cooling. The 27.5 MB last-level cache reduces memory latency during long-running compute tasks. Eight DIMM slots populated with 16 GB modules at 2666 MT/s keep memory bandwidth stable over extended periods. Redundant power supplies and hot-plug drive bays allow component replacement without service interruption.
