Socket and chipset

This MSI Z790 GAMING WIFI board uses the LGA 1700 socket and Intel Z790 chipset. It accepts Intel Core 12th, 13th and 14th generation processors as well as Pentium Gold and Celeron CPUs. The ATX form factor fits standard chassis designs.

Memory and expansion limits

Dual-channel DDR5 is supported up to 7800 MHz when overclocked, with a maximum capacity of 256 GB. Three PCIe x16 slots and two PCIe x1 slots provide expansion room; the top slot runs at PCIe 4.0 x16 from the CPU, the second at PCIe 3.0 x1 from the chipset, and the third at PCIe 4.0 x4 from the chipset. Four SATA III ports and three M.2 interfaces handle storage.

Connectivity and audio

A Realtek RTL8125BG controller delivers 2.5 Gbps LAN. Rear I/O includes four USB 5 Gbps Type-A ports, three USB 10 Gbps Type-A ports and one USB 10 Gbps Type-C port. Front headers add four USB 2.0, four USB 5 Gbps Type-A and one USB 10 Gbps Type-C connection. The Realtek ALC897 codec provides 7.1-channel high-definition audio with S/PDIF output.
