Arduino R3 compatible WiFi shield

The SparkFun ESP8266 WiFi Shield is an Arduino compatible shield for the ESP8266 WiFi SoC. It uses the Arduino R3 layout so it fits development boards with that pinout. Headers require soldering before use. The board provides an inexpensive gateway to the Internet for Arduino projects.

Sustained operation with AT-command firmware

The shield arrives pre-flashed with an AT-command firmware that handles WiFi communication during extended sessions. The ESP8266 SoC manages the network stack independently while the host Arduino sends serial commands. GPIO pins and an ADC remain available for sensors or actuators throughout long-running IoT tasks.

ESP8266 SoC defines capability

The onboard ESP8266 WiFi SoC determines the wireless performance and available I/O for the project. It provides almost a dozen configurable digital I/O lines plus an ADC broken out on the shield. The module can be reprogrammed through its programming port for custom firmware if the AT-command set is insufficient.

Spurningar um þessa vöru

Does the ESP8266 WiFi Shield run hot or draw much power when it stays connected to Wi-Fi all day?

The ESP8266 SoC is a low-power device and the shield draws its supply from the host Arduino, so heat and current stay modest during continuous IoT operation.

What Arduino board do I need before this shield will work?

Any development board that uses the Arduino R3 layout will accept the shield once headers are soldered in place.

Can I keep using my existing Arduino Uno R3 with this shield?

Yes — the shield follows the Arduino R3 layout, so it plugs directly onto an Uno R3 or any other R3-format board after the headers are fitted.
