Purpose-built rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server configured with two Intel Silver 4210R processors, each delivering ten cores at 2.4GHz. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 memory are installed across four 16GB modules running at 2666 MT/s. Six 1.2TB 10K SAS drives provide high-speed storage managed by an H730P RAID controller. This specification targets virtualisation hosts, database nodes and compute clusters that demand dense processing and fast local storage in a standard rack footprint.

Thermals and power in operation

Dual 1100W redundant power supplies share the load and maintain uptime if one unit fails. The 2U chassis uses managed airflow to cool both CPUs, memory and the drive cage under sustained workloads. Fan speeds adjust automatically through iDRAC9 Enterprise policies, keeping acoustic output appropriate for a data-centre aisle rather than an office desk. Power draw scales with CPU utilisation and drive activity, so capacity planning should reflect the actual application profile.

Included accessories and management

The shipment includes a front bezel without an LCD panel, sliding rails for rack mounting and power cords for immediate deployment. iDRAC9 Enterprise is licensed on the system board, enabling remote console, virtual media, hardware inventory and automated firmware updates without an additional subscription. Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots remain available for network, storage or accelerator cards, while the Intel X550 NDC already provides two 10Gb RJ45 and two 1Gb RJ45 ports. No optical drive is fitted.
