The drive is 8.10 mm tall with the heatsink attached. Check your motherboard manual for the maximum M.2 module height allowed under the shield.

Does this SSD work in a laptop that only has a SATA M.2 slot?

No. This drive uses a PCI-Express 3.0 x4 NVMe interface and requires an M.2 slot wired for NVMe. A SATA-only M.2 slot will not recognise the drive.
