The drive is 8.10 mm tall with the heatsink attached. Check your motherboard manual for the maximum M.2 module height allowed under the shield.

Does this SSD work in a laptop that only has a SATA M.2 slot?

No. This drive uses a PCI-Express 3.0 x4 NVMe interface and requires an M.2 slot wired for NVMe. A SATA-only M.2 slot will not recognise the drive.

What software is needed to enable the gaming mode mentioned in the features?

The WD BLACK SSD Dashboard provides the gaming mode. Download it from the Western Digital support site after installing the drive.
