The Dell PowerEdge R740xd chassis holds twelve 3.5-inch drive bays in a 2U rack frame, making it suited for backup targets, media archives or local data lakes. Dual Xeon Bronze 3104 processors at 1.7 GHz and 512 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory give enough threads and capacity for file serving, deduplication or light virtualisation. The PERC H730P RAID controller manages SATA arrays with hardware parity offload. No drives are installed, so the bay count can be filled to match the workload.

Sustained Workload Behaviour

Two 1100 W power supplies share the load while the system runs continuous rebuilds, scrubs or sequential ingest without thermal throttling. The 10 GbE 2-port 562T adapter keeps network pipes full during long replication windows. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides remote console, power cycling and sensor logs even when the OS hangs, reducing on-site visits. Firmware is updated to the latest stable release before shipment and a burn-in test verifies stability under load.

Build and Daily Operation

The rack-mount enclosure measures 36 by 24 by 10 inches and weighs 40 pounds, requiring standard square-hole rails for secure mounting. Twelve hot-swap bays allow drive replacement without downtime, while the PERC H730P supports online capacity expansion. Dual redundant power supplies and the 10 GbE adapter use the rear I/O panel, leaving the front clear for drive access. Rail kits are available on request for quick installation.
