Dense 2U storage server

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 packs 26 front-accessible 3.5-inch drive bays into a 2U rack frame. Dual Intel Xeon Gold 6154 processors deliver 18 cores each at 3.0 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo for compute-heavy data workloads. One hundred twenty-eight gigabytes of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory populate eight of sixteen slots. The system targets software-defined storage, backup repositories and media archives that demand high capacity in minimal rack space.

Build requirements and expansion

Two LGA 3647 sockets are fully occupied, so no further CPU upgrades are possible. Sixteen DDR4 slots accept registered ECC modules up to a 1 TB ceiling. The PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache drives 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA devices across RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through. An OCP 2.0 mezzanine adds dual 10/25 Gb SFP28 ports alongside the integrated dual-port 1 GbE LOM. Redundant hot-swap 1100 W platinum power supplies keep the chassis running during module replacement.

Included management and accessories

iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides out-of-band remote console, power control and firmware updates over a dedicated network interface. Twenty-six Dell 14G 3.5-inch drive trays ship installed, ready for SAS, SATA or SSD media. The H730P battery backs controller cache during power loss. Front bezel and ready rails are not included, so rack mounting hardware must be sourced separately.
