The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a dual-socket rack server built for dense scale-out data center computing. Two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors deliver 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory occupies eight of twenty-four slots. The 1U chassis includes redundant 750 W platinum power supplies, rails and a front bezel.

Upgrade From Single-Socket Or Older 2U

This system replaces single-socket servers or previous-generation 2U platforms when workloads demand more cores and memory channels in the same rack footprint. The jump is worth it for virtualisation clusters, database nodes or HPC tasks that scale across two sockets and can use the twelve 12 Gb/s SAS bays. Limits Of 12 Gb/s SAS And 1U Density

The PERC H730P controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 over twelve 12 Gb/s SAS lanes, but the backplane only accepts 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives. Four 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports handle network traffic, yet the 1U height leaves no room for full-height add-in cards. Memory tops out at 3 TB when all twenty-four slots are populated.
