The Dell PowerEdge R940 fits four Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each with 24 cores at 2.1 GHz, into a 3U rack chassis. With 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 48 slots and a PERC H730P controller, it targets databases, virtualization and real-time analytics that demand high core counts and large memory capacity.

Hot-swap bays and redundant power for continuous

Eight 2.5-inch drive bays support SATA and SAS devices; two 800 GB SATA SSDs are installed. The H730P controller provides RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through with a battery-backed cache. Dual 1600 W platinum power supplies and a quad-port network daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links are hot-swappable, while iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables remote management.

The 3U form factor allows larger heatsinks and directed airflow, so fan speeds remain lower than in denser 1U or 2U designs. iDRAC 9 Enterprise monitors inlet temperature, power draw and fan health in real time, letting operators adjust policies before thermal thresholds are reached.
