OWC 32GB DDR3 ECC Registered Kit

This OWC kit supplies 32GB of DDR3 1600 memory in two 16GB registered DIMMs. It is built for Supermicro H8 and X9 series motherboards that require ECC registered modules. The 240-pin RDIMMs operate at 1.5V with CL11 latency and a 2Rx4 organisation. Standard desktop boards cannot use this memory because they lack registered buffer support.

Sustained server workload behaviour

ECC circuitry corrects single-bit errors on the fly, preventing data corruption during long compute runs or heavy virtualisation loads. Registered buffering reduces electrical load on the memory controller, allowing the platform to keep all slots populated at the rated 1600 MT/s without downclocking. The modules run at the JEDEC standard 1.5V, so thermal output remains predictable inside dense chassis.

Upgrade path from Supermicro MEMDR316L parts

This kit replaces Supermicro part numbers MEMDR316LHL01ER16 and MEMDR316LSL01ER16 with a matched pair of OWC 16GB DIMMs. The jump is worth it when a workstation or server needs the full 32GB capacity across two slots for larger datasets or more concurrent virtual machines. It is not for systems that only accept unbuffered ECC or non-ECC UDIMMs.
