The HP ProLiant DL160 Gen9 fits in a single rack unit and ships with one eight-core Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 processor at 2.4 GHz. Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 ECC memory occupy two of the sixteen DIMM slots, leaving room for expansion up to the platform maximum. Two 1 TB 7.2 K SATA drives are installed in the eight-bay SFF chassis, and the B140i controller provides software RAID levels 0, 1 and 5. A redundant 550 W hot-swap power supply is included.

This configuration works well for environments that run on SATA storage and can operate with a single processor. The B140i controller supports only SATA drives, so the system cannot use the SAS backplane or SAS disks that the chassis is able to accept. Only one CPU is installed and the second socket remains empty, so applications that require two processors from day one will need an additional kit. Buyers who need hardware RAID or immediate dual-processor performance should look elsewhere.
