The Dell PowerEdge M640 half-height blade fits into PowerEdge MX or M1000e chassis and targets workloads such as virtualisation, private cloud and high-performance computing. Two Xeon Gold 6150 processors provide 36 cores at 2.7 GHz base and 3.7 GHz turbo, with 128 GB DDR4 ECC memory installed across eight slots. It is built for data-centre operators who need high core density in a shared infrastructure. || Buyers who need local GPU acceleration or more than two 2.5-inch drive bays should look elsewhere.

Chassis integration and expansion

The blade requires a compatible MX or M1000e enclosure for power, cooling and fabric connectivity. A Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb daughter card handles network I/O through the chassis mid-plane. The PERC H330 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 across the two front-accessible 2.5-inch SAS or SATA trays. Sixteen DIMM slots allow memory growth up to the platform limit. || Builders who want on-board NVMe bays or additional PCIe cards cannot use this form factor.

Sustained-load behaviour

Dual 18-core Xeons and registered ECC DDR4 are rated for continuous multi-threaded throughput in virtualised or HPC clusters. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides remote telemetry and power capping to keep thermals stable inside a fully populated chassis. The H330 controller maintains consistent RAID performance during extended rebuilds or background scrubbing. || Environments that demand liquid cooling or specialised accelerator cards are not served by this blade.
