What this enclosure does

The Orico M2PJ-C3 is an aluminium M.2 NVMe drive enclosure with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C interface. It accepts single-sided or double-sided M-key and B+M-key NVMe SSDs in 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths up to 2TB capacity. The enclosure works with Windows, Mac and Linux systems and supports hot-swappable plug-and-play operation without driver installation. Android devices with USB-C and OTG support can also use the enclosure.

Sustained transfer behaviour

The USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C connection delivers up to 10Gbps bandwidth when the host port is also Gen 2; Gen 1 ports limit throughput to 5Gbps. An auto-sleep function powers the drive down after 10 minutes of inactivity to extend SSD lifespan. The enclosure supports only PCIe-based NVMe protocol drives; SATA-based M.2 SSDs and PCIe AHCI drives are not recognised regardless of key type.

Thermals and power

The aluminium alloy case acts as a heatsink alongside copper bars on the PCBA and an included thermal pad to dissipate heat from high-speed NVMe drives. It is normal for the case to become warm during operation as heat transfers from the SSD to the enclosure body. The compact 106.5mm by 29mm by 11.5mm form factor draws power directly from the USB-C bus without an external adapter.

Does the aluminum case get hot when the NVMe drive runs continuously?

The enclosure uses copper bars with holes on the PCBA, a thermal pad, and the aluminum shell to draw heat away from the SSD. The case warming up is normal during sustained transfers.

What host port and cable are required to reach the 10Gbps link speed?

You need a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port on the host and a cable rated for 10Gbps. A USB 3.1 Gen 1 port will limit throughput to 5Gbps.
