4U Quad-Socket Server System

This Supermicro SYS-8048B-TRFT is a new 4U rackmount server fitted with four Intel Xeon E7-4850 v2 processors at 2.3 GHz and 1.5 TB of DDR3 ECC memory. It provides 24 front-accessible 3.5-inch hot-swap bays for SATA or SAS drives and an LSI MegaRAID 9361-8i controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Dual 10GBase-T ports and IPMI 2.0 with KVM-over-LAN are included for connectivity and remote management. Four 1620 W Platinum redundant power supplies deliver power redundancy.

Enterprise Storage and Compute Workloads

The 48 total cores and 1.5 TB memory suit virtualisation hosts, large databases and analytics platforms that demand high core counts and massive drive density. Buyers who need GPU compute accelerators or a smaller rack footprint should evaluate alternative platforms. The Matrox G200 graphics with 8 MB video memory is intended for console output only and does not support graphical workloads. Organisations without 4U rack space or 10 GbE infrastructure will not utilise the full I/O capability.

24 Hot-Swap 3.5-Inch Drive Bays

The single specification that decides fit is the 24-bay 3.5-inch hot-swap backplane, which determines maximum raw storage capacity and drive-type compatibility. The MegaRAID 9361-8i provides eight internal SAS 12 Gb/s ports with 1 GB cached battery-backed write-back, so expansion beyond eight direct ports requires additional controllers. Memory runs at 1600 MHz across 96 DIMM slots, and the system supports up to 11 PCIe 3.0 slots for further I/O expansion.
