The HP ProLiant DL160 Gen9 is a 1U rack server built for general-purpose workloads. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 eight-core processor running at 2.4 GHz and 8 GB of DDR4 memory. Two 146 GB 15K SAS drives and a Smart HBA H240 controller provide immediate storage. Redundant hot-swap power supplies support uptime requirements.

Upgrade path from single-socket limits

The chassis supports a second Xeon E5 v3 processor, raising the core count to 36 and enabling 16 DIMM slots for up to 1 TB of memory. Adding the second CPU is worth it when threaded applications exceed the 16 threads of the installed chip. The eight 2.5-inch drive bays allow further SAS or SATA expansion without a chassis change.

SAS interface and controller constraints

The Smart HBA H240 delivers 12 Gbps SAS and 6 Gbps SATA connectivity with RAID 0, 1 and 5 support. Drives are limited to the 6 Gbps link speed of the installed 15K SAS disks. The Matrox G200 graphics output is intended for management consoles only. No operating system is included, so software RAID or hypervisor installation is required.
