GPIO extension adapter

This 40-pin FPC to straight 2x20 IDC female socket header adapter extends a Raspberry Pi's GPIO capabilities. It accepts any 40-pin 0.5mm FPC ribbon cable with A-B connections. The socket side plugs directly into the Pi while the flex connector mates with the ribbon cable. A matching adapter board can attach a HAT or bonnet at the far end.

Sustained connection reliability

The adapter maintains all 40 signal paths through the flexible cable without active components. Signal integrity depends on the quality and length of the chosen FPC ribbon. Mechanical strain on the flex connector is minimal once the cable is seated. No thermal load is generated by the passive PCB.

Installation notes

Align pin 1 carefully when inserting the FPC into the 40-pin flex connector. Some HATs such as the Sense HAT or bonnets with slim bottom connectors need a socket riser to give the cable more grip. The PCB measures 54.3mm by 26mm by 11.8mm. A 40-pin extender can be snapped on if additional length is required.
