This Dell PowerEdge M640 half-height blade server is a new unit equipped with two Intel Xeon Gold 6150 processors, each running at 2.7 GHz with 18 cores and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. It arrives with 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules and includes an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for full remote management. The blade fits PowerEdge MX and M1000e chassis and provides two 2.5-inch drive bays with SAS and SATA caddies.

Suited for virtualisation hosts needing maximum

Organisations running heavily virtualised workloads, private clouds or high-performance computing clusters will benefit from the 36 total cores and 1.5 TB maximum memory capacity supported by the platform. Buyers who need local NVMe storage must add a compatible controller because the integrated PERC S140 handles SATA and NVMe but the blade ships without drives. Those requiring GPU acceleration or Fibre Channel connectivity should look at other form factors.

Dual 10 GbE mezzanine decides network topology

The installed Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 GbE daughter card provides the blade’s only on-board network connectivity, so the chassis fabric must support 10 GbE pass-through or switching modules to use these ports. If your environment relies on 1 GbE infrastructure or demands more than two ports per node, a different mezzanine card or chassis-level fabric module is required. The S140 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 across the two drive bays.
