Blade density for virtualised workloads

The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for high-density compute in MX or M1000e chassis. Two Xeon Gold 6230 processors provide 20 cores each at 2.1 GHz with a 3.9 GHz turbo ceiling. 32 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory occupies four of sixteen slots. The PERC S140 controller manages up to two 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives in the supplied caddies.

Sustained multi-core throughput

Under continuous load the dual 20-core CPUs maintain base frequency across all 56 available cores per server, avoiding the single-core turbo spikes seen in lighter tasks. The integrated S140 controller handles RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 for local storage without a dedicated cache, so write-heavy workloads run at drive speed. Dual 10 Gb Ethernet ports from the Broadcom 57810S-K daughter card keep network saturation low during cluster operations.

Thermal envelope and management

Blade form factor relies on chassis-level cooling; the server itself has no independent fans, so acoustic output is determined by the enclosure. Power draw scales with both CPUs active at base clock, staying within the half-height slot budget. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides out-of-band monitoring, firmware updates and remote console access without an operating system.
