The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade that fits the PowerEdge MX and M1000e chassis. It ships with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each running 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across four modules and a PERC H330 controller that supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50. Dual 10 Gb ports are provided by a Broadcom 57810S-K daughter card, and iDRAC9 Enterprise handles remote management.

Blade chassis limits expansion

Because the M640 is a blade, it has no PCIe slots and no internal drive bays beyond the two 2.5-inch trays supplied. Maximum memory is 1.5 TB across 16 DDR4 slots, so the installed 64 GB leaves room to grow. The PERC H330 connects only SAS and SATA devices; NVMe drives require a different controller not present here. Network connectivity is fixed to the dual 10 Gb ports on the mezzanine card, and GPU options are limited to the basic Matrox G200 with 8 MB video memory.

Confirm the chassis firmware supports the Xeon Platinum 8160 and the 57810S-K network daughter card. No operating system, front bezel or ready rails are included, so plan for OS deployment and physical mounting separately.
