The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack-mounted server system designed for dense scale-out data centre computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules and a Dell PERC H730P storage controller with 2 GB cache. Eight 800 GB SATA SSDs fill the front 2.5-inch drive bays.

24 DDR4 slots define maximum memory

The motherboard provides 24 DDR4 DIMM slots with a maximum supported capacity of 3 TB. The installed 64 GB uses only four slots, leaving 20 slots available for expansion. Memory must be DDR4 registered ECC; other DDR generations are physically and electrically incompatible. The LGA 3647 socket and Intel C620 chipset limit processor upgrades to the Scalable family supported by this platform.
