2U Server for Data-Intensive Workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R730xd is a 2U rack server built for midsize and large enterprises running data warehouses, e-commerce platforms, virtual desktop infrastructure, databases or high-performance computing nodes. It ships with two Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4 processors, each delivering 14 cores at 2.4 GHz with a 3.3 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. Twelve 3.5-inch drive trays accept SATA or SAS drives but no drives are installed.

12-Bay Chassis and Storage Controller Limits

The chassis provides twelve 3.5-inch hot-swap bays connected to a Dell PERC H730 controller with 1 GB cache and battery backup. That controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode over 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA links. Network connectivity comes from an Intel X520/I350 daughter card offering two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports. Remote management is handled by iDRAC 8 Enterprise. Power is supplied by two redundant 750 W platinum-efficiency hot-swap units.

128 GB Memory with 1.5 TB Headroom

The board holds 24 DDR4 slots; eight are populated leaving sixteen free for expansion up to the 1.5 TB maximum. Two processor sockets are both occupied so no further CPU upgrades are possible. The twelve drive bays set the storage device ceiling while the dual 10 Gb SFP+ ports define the high-speed network boundary. Buyers needing more than twelve drives or additional CPU sockets must look to a different platform.
