2U rack server with 12 drive bays

The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits in a standard 2U rack space and provides twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug bays for SAS or SATA drives. A single Intel Xeon E5-2630v3 eight-core processor running at 2.4 GHz delivers sixteen threads with hyper-threading. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 memory are installed across the twenty-four DIMM slots. The Perc H330 controller manages RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60. Two 750 W redundant power supplies keep the system running if one unit fails.

Storage limits with the H330 controller

The H330 12 Gbps RAID controller supports a maximum raw capacity of 52 TB across the twelve bays. Each installed 2 TB SAS drive spins at 7.2 K RPM and uses a 6 Gbps link, so the array throughput is bounded by the drive speed rather than the controller. The server includes a DVD-ROM drive for legacy media. Networking starts with a four-port 1 GbE daughter card; optional 10 GbE cards are not included. Six PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated RAID slot remain available for additional adapters.

Upgrade path from smaller rack servers

This system replaces a 1U server that has fewer drive bays, a single power supply or limited memory slots. The jump is worthwhile when you need twelve hot-plug bays, redundant power and twenty-four DIMM slots in a 2U form factor. Buyers who need more than 64 GB of memory can populate the remaining slots up to the platform maximum of 1536 GB with a second processor. The single CPU configuration leaves half the memory channels and one socket unused. Remote management uses iDRAC8 Express with an upgrade path to Enterprise and vFlash media.
