The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits 24 hot-plug 2.5-inch drive bays into a 2U rack chassis. A single Xeon E5-2630v3 eight-core processor at 2.4 GHz and 8 GB of DDR4 provide a baseline for storage-heavy workloads such as backup targets, software-defined storage nodes or media archives. Three 300 GB 15K SAS drives and the H730 RAID controller with 1 GB cache are included.

SAS bandwidth and memory ceiling

The backplane connects drives through 6 Gbps SAS links, so sustained throughput tops out at that interface speed regardless of drive count. The H730 supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across the full 24-bay set. Memory is capped at 8 GB in this configuration; the board offers 24 DIMM slots but the installed CPU limits total capacity to 8 GB, so larger datasets must live on disk rather than in RAM.

Upgrade from smaller 2U arrays

This system replaces 12-bay 2U servers or tower units that have run out of drive slots.
