Mission-critical compute density

The Dell PowerEdge R930 is a 4U rack server equipped with four Intel Xeon E7-8890 v4 processors running at 2.2 GHz, each providing 24 cores for a total of 96 cores. It ships with 3 TB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 96 slots and includes a PERC H330 storage controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50. Quad-port networking with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports is provided by an Intel X520/I350 daughter card.

Build integration requirements

The server occupies 4U of rack space and requires four 1100 W power supplies, which are included along with ready rails and a front bezel. Four 2.5-inch drive trays with screws are supplied for the front bays, while the chassis supports up to 24 hot-plug SAS or SATA drives plus eight NVMe PCIe SSDs. iDRAC8 Enterprise enables remote management and agent-free provisioning without additional software agents. The Matrox G200 graphics with 8 MB video memory handles basic console output.

Workload fit and limits

This system suits organisations running in-memory databases, large-scale virtualisation, SAP HANA, Oracle or SQL Server workloads that demand maximum core count and memory capacity in a single chassis. Buyers who need GPU acceleration for AI training or high-performance computing should look elsewhere, as the platform only provides basic 2D graphics. Environments requiring more than 12 TB of memory or more than four processor sockets will need a different architecture.
