Four-socket Xeon server for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge R940 fits four Intel Xeon Gold 5120 processors into a 3U rack chassis. Each CPU runs at 2.2 GHz with 14 cores and can reach 3.2 GHz under turbo. The system ships with 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 16 modules, leaving 32 slots free for expansion up to 6 TB. It targets organisations that need high thread counts in a compact rack footprint.

Eight enterprise SAS drives and PERC H730P RAID

Eight 2.4 TB 10K SAS drives connect to a Dell PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache and battery backup. The controller supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through mode, letting you configure redundancy or capacity as required. A quad-port network daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for storage and cluster traffic. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides dedicated out-of-band management.

Rails and bezel included; 3U depth needs deep rack

ReadyRails and a front bezel are supplied for standard four-post rack mounting. The 3U height is straightforward, but the chassis depth requires a deep cabinet and adequate airflow planning. Dual 1600 W platinum power supplies are hot-swappable and redundant, so cable routing must allow both units to reach separate PDUs. Memory population follows Dell's optimised sequence; deviating from it can prevent POST.
