Dense compute for virtualised workloads

The PowerEdge R650 is a 1U rack server built around two Xeon Gold 6330 processors. Twenty-eight cores per socket and 64 GB of DDR4 2933 MHz ECC memory give strong multi-threaded throughput for virtualization, database and private-cloud tasks. Ten 2.5-inch SAS bays are populated with 1.8 TB 10 K drives on a PERC H755 controller. Dual 1400 W platinum supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise complete the package.

SAS 12 Gb/s limits sustained throughput

The H755 controller runs the drives at 12 Gb/s SAS, so sequential bandwidth caps at the interface speed rather than the media rate. RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 are supported with 8 GB NV cache and battery backup, yet parity rebuilds on 1.8 TB spindles can take many hours. The 10 GbE SFP+ OCP 3.0 card adds network throughput, but total I/O remains bound by the SAS fabric and PCIe Gen4 lane allocation.

Rails and bezel simplify rack mounting

Ready Rails slide the 1U chassis into standard square-hole or threaded racks without tools, and the front bezel snaps on afterwards. Cable routing is tight at the rear because power, management and network connectors sit close together, so plan patch-panel spacing before sliding the server home. iDRAC9 Enterprise is reachable on its dedicated port once the management network is configured, but the initial IPv4 address must be set through the front-panel LCD or DHCP.
