2U rack server for virtualised workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 eight-core processor running at 2.4 GHz. It ships with 8 GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots and two 300 GB 15K SAS drives on a PERC H330 controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60. The chassis holds up to eight 2.5-inch hot-plug bays and includes redundant 750 W power supplies.

Tool-less drive access and CPU upgrade path

Hot-plug drive trays slide into the front bays without tools, and the PERC H330 occupies a dedicated slot leaving seven PCIe 3.0 slots free. A second processor can be added to the empty socket to double core count and unlock the remaining 12 DIMM slots. The iDRAC8 Express module provides out-of-band management from first boot, though the Enterprise licence and vFlash media are optional upgrades.

Steady throughput with redundant power

Dual 750 W supplies share the load so the server maintains full performance if one unit fails or is replaced. The 15K SAS drives deliver consistent random I/O for databases and virtualisation hosts, while the H330 controller sustains parity rebuilds without throttling. Four onboard 1 GbE ports handle management and tenant traffic, with optional 10 GbE daughter cards available for heavier east-west flows.
