High-capacity 2U server for data-intensive workloads

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd2 is a 2U rack server built for storage-dense environments such as software-defined storage, big data analytics and backup repositories. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6230 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with a 3.9 GHz turbo frequency and 20 cores. The system includes 32 GB of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory across four modules and a Dell PERC H330 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA storage controller. Twenty-six 3.5-inch drive trays provide extensive internal capacity.

Tool-less rail installation

The server uses Dell Ready Rails for tool-less mounting in standard four-post racks, though the rails themselves are not included in this configuration. At 2U height the unit is deep and heavy, so two people or a mechanical lift are recommended to align and secure it safely. The H330 controller arrives pre-installed in a dedicated slot, and the 26 drive trays slide into the front bays without cabling. Memory population follows a specific sequence across the 16 DIMM slots; incorrect placement will prevent the system from posting.

12 Gb/s SAS/SATA interface limits drive throughput

The PERC H330 controller operates at 12 Gb/s per SAS or SATA lane, which caps the maximum sequential transfer rate of any attached drive to that bandwidth. Each of the 26 bays connects through the backplane to the controller, so aggregate throughput depends on the number of active drives and the RAID level chosen. The dual-port 10/25 Gb SFP28 OCP 3.0 mezzanine card adds high-speed networking, but storage performance remains bound by the 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA link. The 1 TB memory ceiling across 16 slots also limits future expansion beyond the installed 32 GB.
