Four-socket Xeon server for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge R940 packs four Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores, into a 3U rack chassis. That yields 48 cores and 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 48 slots. The PERC H730P controller manages the two included 400 GB SATA SSDs and supports RAID levels up to 60. A quad-port network daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 GbE SFP+ links.

Sustained load on all 48 cores

Turbo frequency reaches 3.2 GHz, but with four sockets fully populated the system is built to hold base clocks under continuous multi-threaded workloads such as database analytics or virtualization clusters. The C620 chipset and 2400 MHz memory subsystem feed data without bottlenecks, while the H730P battery-backed cache keeps write latency predictable during long transactions. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides out-of-band monitoring so administrators can track thermal headroom and power draw in real time.

Redundant 1600 W platinum supplies

Dual hot-swap 1600 W platinum power supplies share the load, keeping fan speeds lower than single-supply designs at equivalent output. The 3U form factor allows generous airflow paths across the CPU heatsinks and memory banks, so acoustic output stays within typical data-centre limits even when all cores are active. No liquid cooling or special ducting is required; standard rack cooling is sufficient.
